VEIL, a group exhibition by New World School of the Arts’ 2025 college BFA graduating students, showcases a variety of works from 25 visual artists of divergent disciplines. The exhibition, professionally curated by artist María Martínez-Cañas and gallerist Fredric Snitzer, both NWSA faculty members, is the culmination of the participating students’ four years of intensive study at NWSA.
VEIL explores both imagined and existing boundaries experienced by the student artists while tracing several years of conceptually aware practice at New World School of the Arts. Through a diverse range of mediums and disciplines, the students’ work explores the tension of visibility, searching to find answers of what is hidden underneath. One work by student Ariana Diaz embraces this investigation of transparency vs. contrast through material, balancing transparency vs contrast. Larger than life images are printed on mesh and layered, allowing spaces between each layer causing the colors and composition to shift subtly as the viewer moves through the gallery. The figure, sleeping quietly, blurs the lines of visibility and asks us – what lies beyond the obvious?
Through their varied approaches the artists investigate this narrative of transformation and visibility. Some works, like Diaz’s, use materials and imagery to offer an immediate dialogue while others are deliberately obscure, inviting viewers to look closer and discover what lies beyond the surface. As the light of day moves so does the audience’s perspective, altering the view of how each piece is seen. Whether by design or limitation, VEIL is intimately woven into each piece throughout the exhibition, a reminder that perception is solely that – fluid and ever changing.
