Rally for Democracy Held at Freedom TowerMDC alum Jencarlos Canela led the rally in support of the plight of the Cuban people

Cuban American singer, songwriter, actor and Miami Dade College /New World School of the Arts alumnus Jencarlos Canela led a rally for democracy in Cuba alongside  international artists and activists including Emilio Estefan, Willy Chirino, Lissette, Rosa María Payá, Marcell Felipe, Ramón Saúl Sánchez, and Silvia Iriondo, among others.

The event took place on Saturday, July 17, at MDC’s Freedom Tower, considered the “Ellis Island of the South” for its role in assisting Cuban refugees in the 1960s and 70s and because it serves as a beacon of hope for all. The event showcased a montage of 150 videos from the island, and culminated with the Freedom Tower illuminated in red, white and blue in representation of the Cuban flag. The powerful event showcased a unified community in solidarity and reaffirmed the role the College and the Freedom Tower continue to play in fostering the principles of democracy.
