Miami Dade College Foundation’s I AM MDC Day set another annual fundraising record for a fifth consecutive year.
On September 6, this community raised an unprecedented $2.7 million for MDC students. The online giving campaign, held annually on the date the College was founded, has raised more than $5 million since 2016.
“Today, we celebrate a record-breaking year,” said Al Salas, board chair of Miami Dade College Foundation Board of Directors. “We are astounded and grateful for the generosity of South Florida. Once again, the outpouring of support around I AM MDC Day proves there is a collective community understanding of the transformative impact of MDC on Miami.”
I AM MDC Day celebrates the community-building power of MDC and over 2 million lives changed since first opening its doors on September 6, 1960. All dollars raised on the giving day benefit student scholarships and programs that support students.
Notable gifts designated for important programs include a $1.6 million gift from the Mitchell Wolfson Sr. Foundation for MDC’s Kick-Start program that covers tuition and stipends for unemployed individuals to retrain in high-demand fields, a $250,000 gift from the Braman Family Foundation for completion scholarships, and a $30,000 donation from Miami Marlins Foundation for first-generation students.
I AM MDC Day community partners and corporate sponsors included BankMobile; Banco Santander; Braman Family Foundation; Carla Probus, Jonas Meyers, and Miami Beach Police Department Chief Rick Clements in memory of Chief Mark Overton; City National Bank of Florida; Facebook; GEICO; MagicWaste Youth Foundation; MDC Foundation Board of Directors; Miami Marlins Foundation; and Mitchell Wolfson Sr. Foundation.
The giving day’s virtual festivities kicked off with a cake challenge issued by MDC Executive Vice President and Provost, Dr. Lenore Rodicio, to celebrate the College’s 60th birthday. Kelbin Live, MDC ‘13, co-host of 97.3’s The SoFlo Morning Show continued the fun by counting us down to the big day with alumni interviews and giveaways on his hit show. More than 400 fans also tuned into our MDC Day at Marlins Park virtual pre-game event before the September 2nd Miami Marlins game.
