A new scholarship fund spearheaded by philanthropists and longtime Key Biscayne residents, William and Toby Rohrer, is helping more dreams come true while strengthening ties between two “Sister Cities” in Miami.
Through their philanthropic work with various organizations in their community, the Rohrer’s sought to strengthen Key Biscayne’s ties with its “Sister City” of Liberty City just 20 miles away. In 2018, they partnered with the Key Biscayne Community Foundation, The Chief Press Foundation and Miami Children’s Initiative to create the Bill & Toby Rohrer Scholarship for high school seniors continuing their education at MDC. Two students, Octavis Hudson and Kiera Wright, were awarded scholarships this year, and more will be awarded incrementally, in years to come.
“I grew up in the projects where making it out wasn’t guaranteed. This scholarship has changed my life,” says Wright who is pursuing a nursing degree.
“I’m proud to be the first in my family to go to college. I wouldn’t still be here without this scholarship,” says Hudson, who is pursuing Music Business – Creative Production.
The Rohrer’s are committed to putting Liberty City students on the path to success at MDC, with scholarships, mentorship and internship opportunities. In December, Toby joined the Board of Directors of Miami Dade College Foundation, and the couple opened their home for friends and neighbors to join them in supporting more scholarships.
