Sixty-four MDC students have been selected to receive a total of $67,300 in scholarships. The I AM MDC Scholarship awards are the result of I AM MDC Day on Sept. 6, a 24-hour fundraising campaign that engaged MDC alumni and friends in the community to raise money for scholarships.

I AM MDC scholars have received $500-$1000 to help pay for tuition, books, supplies and fees. Students were selected based on their academic achievement and financial need.

The scholarship awards were formally announced at “An Evening of Gratitude” honoring I AM MDC Day donors and the scholars, hosted by Brickell Luxury Motors.

“Scholarships awarded to MDC students have an incomparable impact on the recipient and a multiplier effect on their families and communities,” said Mark Cole, executive director of MDC Foundation and vice president of Advancement.

Several I AM MDC student scholarship recipients had an opportunity to thank donors firsthand for their support. “Thanks to the incredible generosity of donors like you who made the I AM MDC Scholarship possible, my life is about to change,” said Daniel Aguiar, who can leave one of his part-time jobs to more fully focus on school. Aguiar is an aspiring entrepreneur who plans to attend graduate school after completing his bachelor’s degree at MDC.

The impact that Miami Dade College makes on lives and careers was apparent with the story of MDC alumnus Mario Murgado, who spoke at the event. Today, as President and CEO of Brickell Motors, he credits MDC with giving him his start.

Scholarships are the lifeblood of any academic institution. At MDC, 67 percent of students are considered low income and 46 percent live below the federal poverty level for their household size. About 79 percent of first-time, full-time MDC students require financial assistance.
