Five Miami Dade College (MDC) students have been honored with the prestigious Frances Wolfson Art Scholarship for tuition, books, fees and art supplies during today’s awards luncheon hosted by Miami Dade College Foundation.

The 2018 scholarship winners are MDC students Alexey Benitez from Cutler Bay, Erika Cantin from Kendall, Lorena Fernandez from Hialeah, Barbara Morales from Miami, and Patricia Soler from Homestead. They will each receive a $1,500 to continue their studies next academic year. Their winning art submissions, which include original paintings, drawings in acrylic, charcoal and mixed media, were on display during the luncheon.

To date, more than 200 Frances Wolfson Art Scholarships have been awarded to MDC and New World School of the Arts students.

The late South Florida artist and philanthropist Frances Wolfson used proceeds from her paintings and Hallmark greeting cards to establish the MDC Frances Wolfson Art Scholarship to support the dreams of young artists in perpetuity.

“We are grateful for the vision of the late Frances Wolfson who created a means for future artists to pursue their dreams,” said Mark Cole, vice president of advancement and executive director of Miami Dade College Foundation. “Because of this scholarship, more talented artists are on the path to becoming tomorrow’s changemakers in the arts.”

Since 1965, MDC Foundation has been committed to raising essential private funds for Miami Dade College to change lives, families, communities and the world through the opportunity of education.
