New World School of the Arts Symphony Orchestra returns to the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts under the baton of the newest NWSA music faculty, Dr. Grant Gilman, making his Arsht Center debut with the NWSA Symphony. Dr. Gilman will guide the musicians through an array of masterworks, including Dvořák’s Symphony No. 8, with lush melodies and lively rhythms, Beethoven’s bold and energetic Egmont Overture, and Barber’s Adagio for Strings, a timeless piece filled with rich and expressive sounds.
A highlight in the program will be when renowned cellist Andrei Ioniță, winner of the 2015 Tchaikovsky International Competition, performs the intricate and exuberant Tchaikovsky’s Rococo Variations.
“This is a concert not to miss,” said Dr. Daniel Andai, NWSA Dean of Music. “Dr. Gilman has proven to be an energetic, compassionate, and committed artist and faculty. Our guest artist is a masterful soloist and I am certain that all in attendance will enjoy this evening of music. These are the types of collaborations and musical offerings that make New World School of the Arts unique and special; talented students, a great conductor, a world-class soloist, all happening blocks from the campus in a wonderful hall based in our hometown.”
Andrei Ioniță will offer a Make Art Work [MAW] masterclass featuring cello students from the NWSA Cello Studio of Dr. German Marcano. Entitled “Maintaining a Music Career after Winning Competitions,” in this class Ioniță will cover topics related to interpretation and performance to give students a window into the intricacies required to excel in competitions at national and international levels. Masterclass is on Monday, March 17; 5 PM. MDC Wolfson Campus Auditorium. 300 NE 2 Avenue, Room 1261, Miami.
Making his U.S. debut in 2017 with recitals in Chicago and Washington, D.C., Andrei Ioniță gave his New York debut recital in Carnegie Hall’s Zankel Hall. Previous season highlights include performances with the Chicago Symphony, Gewandhaus Orchestra, Detroit Symphony, Münchner Philharmoniker, Orchestre symphonique de Montréal, BBC Philharmonic, Danish National Symphony, Royal Scottish National Orchestra, San Diego Symphony, Yomiuri Nippon Symphony, and the BBC National Orchestra of Wales. He has worked with famous conductors including Herbert Blomstedt, Cristian Macelaru, Sylvain Cambreling, Kent Nagano, Omer Meir Wellber, John Storgårds, Joanna Mallwitz, and Ruth Reinhardt. He has given recitals at Konzerthaus Berlin, Elbphilharmonie, Zurich Tonhalle, LAC Lugano, and L’Auditori in Barcelona, as well as at the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Schleswig-Holstein, Verbier, and Martha Argerich Festivals. New world School of the Arts’ Make Art Work [MAW] is designed to bring professionals in the art world together with students and the community for a dialogue on the business of art. The series focuses on providing tools, guidance and strategies for success to the next generation of artists and will expand understanding of what it takes to live as an artist in the twenty-first century. Each talk includes a Q&A session, allowing students and the public opportunities for direct communication with leaders in the arts.
The academic music curriculum at New World School of the Arts fosters creativity and develops a knowledge of musical heritage. Course work develops the student’s growth and maturity in comprehensive musicianship. The study of music history and theory is pursued by taking a variety of classes, including foundations of music; surveys of music history in the western world, jazz and pop music in America, and music of the world’s people; and seminars in composition aesthetics, jazz improvisation, chamber music, and general musicianship. Students receive private lessons each term. The Private Lesson program offered by the music division is unique. Each student has the privilege of studying on a one-on-one basis with the New World artist faculty. Rigorous daily practice and preparation is expected of each student with their progress closely monitored. Each student is required to perform a solo jury at the end of each semester before the entire faculty of their area. Information about New World School of the Arts music division at 305-237-3622.
