The New World School of the Arts college musical theatre students take to the stage with the record-setting Tony award-nominated Broadway musical Company, written by George Furth and Stephen Sondheim. Under the direction of NWSA theater professor James Randolph, Jr., musical highlights the artistic talent of the acting and musical theatre students in the New World School of the Arts college theatre BFA program. “This musical changed the face of American Musical Theatre, since its’ first performance, the influence and impacts of the work are still seen today,” said Randolph.
Opening in 1970, Company premiered at a time where the social constructs of America were at a crossroads and musical theatre was beginning to transition from the great classic Golden Age musical with a large cast to a smaller production and more unique structures. Sondheim’s groundbreaking musical Company is particular to its original time period, but it’s still relevant to today’s audiences, who can find themselves or their family members in this piece of theatre that humorously explores marriage and relationships. The show is about what makes life worth living and how everyone searches for someone to keep them company. It brings to the forefront human beings’ unending quest to be a part of something—not to be alone, but to be connected to someone. “We see the central character Robert take the journey that all people eventually take. He is compelled to make a choice. So, in having an epiphany, he will begin to see the process of how a life ultimately changes. The audience goes through the same experience, surrounded by the glorious music of Stephen Sondheim,” explained director Randolph.
The New World School of the Arts theatre program is dedicated to the professional training of talented and committed students interested in pursuing a performing career in theatre and musical theatre, offering students an opportunity to work in a hands-on intensive, physically demanding, artistically challenging and exciting environment. Guided by faculty who are professional actors, directors, playwrights and designers, the curriculum is a progressive journey toward the ownership of a personal technique and a comprehensive methodology of working. The faculty guides the student through the discovery and exploration of self, the learning of diverse techniques used in our craft, intensive rehearsal process, and finally the application of this knowledge into dramatic forms and styles in productions.
