MDC’s Carrie P. Meek Entrepreneurial Education Center celebrated its 30th anniversary, as well as its namesake, the Honorable Carrie Pittman Meek, on Tuesday, Dec. 10, 2019.
“As a public servant, Congresswoman Meek was able to direct much support to MDC and its Entrepreneurial Center, an institution that has been at the heart of reviving entrepreneurship in Liberty City and throughout Miami-Dade County,” said Dr. Malou C. Harrison, President of North and Padrón Campuses. “She is responsible for touching countless lives in this community.”
The Meek Center is a major outreach center of the North Campus and offers a specialized focus on entrepreneurship and community development. It provides essential training programs and full operational services to support mobility and growth in the community. Both credit and non-credit programs are offered for degree and non-degree seeking students. Students may obtain workforce and business skills that allow them to enter the labor market or become successful entrepreneurs.
The Meek Center offers innovative academic programs and courses in business, film and TV, criminal justice, STEM, social sciences, education, mathematics, and English, to name a few. The center aims to prepare students with the skillset and knowledge required to lead in their respective industries. This fall, the center enhanced its high-tech learning spaces with an Innovations Lounge that offers students an improved environment to learn, collaborate, and network. Looking toward the future, the center is expanding its program options, technological spaces, and facilities.
In 1982, the Honorable Carrie P. Meek became the first African-American woman elected to the Florida Senate. One of her major projects was to secure the required $2.3 million in state funding for the construction of the Liberty City Entrepreneurial Educational Center at Miami Dade Community College. The center was inaugurated in 1989 and later renamed as MDC’s Carrie P. Meek Entrepreneurial Education Center to continue Meek’s legacy and share her entrepreneurial spirit with the South Florida community. Once she retired from politics, Congresswoman Meek vowed that her work to improve education and social conditions in the area would continue in Liberty City and other inner-city neighborhoods through the Carrie Meek Foundation. She was also a longtime administrator at MDC.
National Human Rights Day was also observed during the anniversary celebration.
