A Message from the Interim President – Coronavirus Update #4

Dear MDC Community,

Given the events of the last few days, it is possible that we will have to transition to remote working sooner than anticipated. This is why the support from every single one of us is crucial at this time as each day brings new challenges to which we have to adapt as a College community. We continue to work closely with state and local authorities and our District Board of Trustees to ensure the safety and health of our students and employees, as well as the academic continuity that our students need.

The College has and continues to follow CDC, state, local guidance and recommendations in its decisions. At this time, there are no immediate concerns preventing employees from reporting to campus in accordance with their regular schedules. There are no current reports of known or suspected College employees having COVID-19. And by canceling classes, we also now have the space across all our campuses to ensure that faculty and staff can maintain additional, precautionary social distance.

Update on Medical and West Campuses

In an abundance of caution, the College has already mobilized the deep cleaning and sanitation of the two campuses where reports of persons with suspected episodes of infection were present. Each of these campuses were completely and thoroughly cleaned, and are ready for all employees on Monday, March 16. Please note that each campus was cleaned in its entirety, not just the areas where these persons were present.

Doing Our Part

We continue to encourage all faculty and staff to make healthy hygiene practices a routine part of their lives both at home and on campus. This includes the following simple recommendations: washing your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds; avoiding touching your face; covering coughs and sneezes; practicing social distancing; and maintaining a clean work environment. These practices are simple and effective in combating the spread of many illnesses, not just COVID-19.

A Note of Gratitude

During these challenging times for the community and our College, I am so grateful to have such a dedicated team of employees keeping our facilities clean, sanitized, and safe. A special note of thanks goes out to our Campus Services and Public Safety teams. Every employee has always been the backbone of Miami Dade College and all its countless successes throughout the years. As College classes remain canceled until Sunday, March 29, I appreciate your important contribution to keeping our students’ education on track by continuing to report to campus as scheduled and remaining focused on your important work as MDC remains fully operational while we ready for the transition to a remote learning environment.

Again, thank you for all you do to ensure our students receive the highest education quality in a safe and healthy environment. Your patience and cooperation as we work through this difficult situation is noticed and appreciated. We are at our best when we come together as a College family to serve our students.
