The One Festival

Presenting close to a dozen monologues this month, New World School of the Arts brings to the stage The One Festival, a collection of fifteen-minute plays written, directed, and acted by the NWSA BFA seniors. In two programs over the course of a weekend, the themes of these plays are relevant, varied and personal and will take audiences on what is on the conscience of these young artists. The two fun bills will take the audience on a roller coaster ride through the experiences of being in one’s early twenties and facing the world.

“I love working on this project with these students. I feel like I’m here to help them create the show they want to create – finding the right way to share their voice. Hopefully these shows will have lives outside of this festival as the students move on from New World,” explained program coordinator Andie Arthur.

“The One Festival is the capstone project of the New World School of the Arts college theatre BFA program. Each student takes what they have learned thus far as NWSA theatre students and create their own show. The program allows students a space to synthesize all their classwork with their individual creative minds. These one person shows are the time during study where they get to make all the major decisions. They go from concept to first draft to rehearsal to tech week with the final say on how the show looks, feels, and is. There are solid parameters that they must work within, but this is their time to shine and show the world who they are through their work,” explained Arthur.

These are stories of finding one’s voice in the world and dealing with mental health issues and grief – but told in 11 intricate ways, often funny and unexpected. The shows range in content from an exploration of grief through the horrors of becoming a werewolf to the personification of anxiety to what happens when an alien crash lands in a parking lot, and you are the only person who can help.

Acting and musical theatre students at NWSA hone their craft through acting technique, movement, and speech classes, focusing on fundamentals of physical and emotional preparation. With performance at its core, training is based on the classical texts and the principles of drama as well as practical incursions into the contemporary and experimental edges of theatre. Consequently, alumni are found performing onstage nationally and internationally and their talent and vision are recognized and highly regarded in the industry. 2024-2025 Theatre Season Scheduled Events.
