Registration is Open for Miami Dade College’s Free Online Contact Tracing Course May 28

Miami, May 19, 2020 – Miami Dade College’s (MDC) Medical Campus will offer a free online course in contact tracing, a rising essential job in the widespread effort to suppress the spread of the novel coronavirus and keep it contained. Registration is open for the four-hour training, which will take place on Thursday, May 28, and has 70 spots available. Participants will earn a certificate upon completion.

As states begin to reopen, many are looking to hire personnel to trace coronavirus infections as part of a long-term plan to keep the virus at bay through contact tracing — a method of tracking newly infected people and their close contacts in an effort to isolate them and stop the disease from spreading. According to the National Association of County and City Health Officials, states need about 30 contact tracers per 100,000 people during the COVID-19 pandemic. Florida would need to have more than 6,400 contact tracers to meet the demand.

The new MDC PROTECTS (PROactive Training and Education for Contact Tracing and Support) course, which is offered through the College’s School of Continuing Education and Professional Development, will prepare individuals to work with hospitals, health and government organizations. The only requirement to apply is a high school diploma or GED.
