Miami, May 22, 2025 – The Cuban Cinema Series, presented by Miami Dade College’s (MDC) Miami Film Festival, will present the documentary “Untitled, Cuba in the Eye of Rick Ray,” directed by Eliecer Jiménez Almeida, at 7 p.m. on Thursday, June 12, at MDC’s Koubek Center. In addition, acclaimed singer-songwriter Pavel Urkiza, who composed the soundtrack for the film, will perform after the screening. This event is free and open to the public with RSVP.
“Untitled, Cuba in the Eye of Rick Ray” was crafted from previously unreleased footage filmed in Cuba during the 1990s by American filmmaker Rick Ray. In the film, Jiménez Almeida reflects on his troubled adolescence and youth on the island during the so-called “Special Period,” when Cuba’s economy hit rock bottom following the collapse of the Eastern Bloc, particularly the Soviet Union.
Jiménez Almeida is an independent Cuban filmmaker living in Miami. His documentary “Veritas” (2022) premiered at the 39th Miami Film Festival and is now available on PBS, Amazon Prime and Apple TV. His films “Persona” (2014), “Entropía” (2013) and “¡Now!” were featured in Documenta 15, Kassel, Germany, through INSTAR’s program.
