Miami Dade College’s Television Station Wins 10th Suncoast Emmy

Miami, Jan. 11, 2024 – Miami Dade College’s (MDC) acclaimed television station, MDC-TV, was recently awarded its 10th Suncoast Regional Emmy Award, presented by The National Academy of Television Arts & Science (NATAS). MDC-TV has won a total of 10 Suncoast Emmys and 17 nominations over the course of 10 years.

“Amid the escalating influx of competition across diverse categories annually, our small College TV station contends with big companies, such as established TV stations, cable networks and seasoned production companies boasting professionals with extensive industry experience,” said Ariel Rubalcava, MDC-TV’s executive director and senior producer. “However, our unique strength lies in the collaborative synergy between our dedicated team of students, professors and allied professionals, who collectively contribute their expertise to our projects.”

MDC-TV won for the production of Video Game Concert ’23 under the Special Event Coverage – Edited category. The production is an innovative, collaborative multimedia concert seamlessly orchestrated by MDC-TV and the MDC Orchestra, led by MDC Professor Alberto Bade. This captivating experience transcends traditional performances as the audience is immersed in the magical fusion of live orchestral music and cutting-edge technology. The orchestra performs iconic compositions from video games and anime, such as Super Mario, Final Fantasy, Skyrim, and Attack on Titan, while projection mapping visuals dynamically transform the stage and its surroundings from multiple angles.

“I do these projects to unite people,” Bade said. “I’ve always enjoyed collaborating because everybody has a special talent. And when you combine all those special talents and you bring them into one concentrated program, it leads to really special things.”
