Miami, June 10, 2022- Miami Dade College’s (MDC) Miami Film Festival in partnership with the MDC North Campus, will celebrate the freedom and culture of African Americans with a special Juneteenth Drive-In Screening of Summer of Soul (…Or, When the Revolution Could Not Be Televised) on Friday, June 17 at 8:30 p.m.  The screening is free and open to the public.

Juneteenth will be officially recognized as a federal holiday for the first time this year on Sunday, June 19 (observed June 20). MDC’s Department of Cultural Affairs, the Miami Film Festival, and North Campus invite the community to start the holiday weekend by coming together to celebrate Black culture by learning more about a groundbreaking and iconic event in history that is often overlooked.

Summer of Soul (…Or, When the Revolution Could Not Be Televised) is a film that has earned widespread acclaim and praise since its release in 2021, including the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature. The film showcases 50-year-old archival footage from The Harlem Cultural Festival in the summer of 1969, footage that had never been seen until recently. Including performances from Nina Simone, Stevie Wonder, Sly and the Family Stone, and more, Summer of Soul presents itself as part documentary and part music footage where the film is centered around an event that celebrates the importance of Black culture, history, music, and pride. In 2021, the film had a lengthy and successful theatrical run at MDC’s Tower Theater Miami along with a special gallery exhibit consisting of high-resolution images of album artwork from the artists featured in the film.

Space is limited and available on a first-come first-served basis. Entry is one ticket per vehicle. To register, visit https://www.squadup.com/events/summer-of-soul-or-when-the-revolution-could-not-be-televised
