Miami Dade College’s Jazz at Wolfson Presents Bassist David Wong

Miami, Nov. 20, 2023 – Miami Dade College’s (MDC) Arts and Philosophy Department at the Wolfson Campus continues its successful Jazz at Wolfson Present series with Bassist David Wong at noon on Wednesday, Dec. 6. This and all Jazz at Wolfson Presents concerts are free and open to the public.

Born and raised in New York City, Wong graduated from the Juilliard School in classical music. He has studied with Orin O’Brien (New York Philharmonic) and Ron Carter. He is currently a member of Roy Haynes’ “Fountain of Youth” band, the Charles McPherson quartet, the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra and Cécile Mclorin Salvant’s “Ogresse” orchestra. He was the bassist for The “Heath Brothers” Quartet led by jazz legends Jimmy Heath and Albert “Tootie” Heath for 12 years. He was also the last bass player in Hank Jones’ “Great Jazz Trio” and is featured on the piano master’s last recording. Wong has performed in many of the major concert halls and jazz clubs throughout the U.S., Europe and Asia. He performs regularly with Steve Kuhn, Bill Charlap, the Jeb Patton Trio, the Dan Nimmer Trio, the Aaron Diehl Trio and Grant Stewart.

Wong has recorded with Hank Jones, Roy Haynes, Jimmy Heath, Albert “Tootie” Heath, The Vanguard Jazz Orchestra, Benny Green, Dick Oatts, Joe Magnerelli, Wycliffe Gordon, Russell Malone, Brian Lynch, Jim Rotondi, John Marshall, Grant Stewart, Sachal Vasandani and Walt Weiskopf. He also has worked with Frank Wess, Kenny Burrell, Joe Wilder, George Coleman, Al Foster, Jimmy Wormworth, Illinois Jacquet, Lou Donaldson, Barry Harris, Slide Hampton, Andy Bey, Wynton Marsalis, Terell Stafford, Gary Smulyan, Ken Peplowski, Eric Reed, Kenny Washington and Lewis Nash.

He is also an adjunct professor at Temple University, Purchase College, The New School, Queens College and regularly teaches at the Skidmore Jazz Institute, the Stanford Jazz Workshop and Jazz at Centrum.
