Miami Dade College to Illuminate Freedom Tower on National Pink Day

Miami, FL, June 15, 2021 – Miami Dade College’s (MDC) will illuminate its National Historic Landmark Freedom Tower pink for National Pink Day at sunset on Wednesday, June 23, in support of the Women’s Breast & Heart Initiative’s (WBHI) Summer Breast Cancer Awareness Campaign.

During the pandemic, mammography utilization decreased by as much as 80%. And although the number of cancer screenings has recently begun to rise, delayed, or missed screenings diagnosed at a later stage could result in a poorer prognosis. One in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer over their lifetime, and the death rate has increased. Early detection is key to saving lives.

Now in its 7th year, the campaign encourages women to get their mammograms on June 23, wear pink and find the color pink in their surroundings, take a photo and post it on https://www.facebook.com/TheWBHI/ and other social media platforms using the hashtag #wbhipinkday.

Established in 2005, the Women’s Breast & Heart (WBHI) Initiative is a nonprofit organization based in South Florida with a mission to educate and provide resources to women and college students about the importance of breast and heart health through its disease prevention & early detection initiatives. Through the community’s support, donations, and volunteerism, the WBHI reaches an average of 11,000 homes annually – providing breast and heart health education, access to mammograms and screenings for heart disease to women whose condition might otherwise go undetected.
