Miami Dade College to Illuminate Freedom Tower in Venezuelan Flag Colors June 27

Miami, June 10, 2019 Miami Dade College (MDC) will illuminate its historic Freedom Tower in the color of the Venezuelan flag on Thursday, June 27, to mark the 7th year anniversary of the Association of Venezuelan Journalists Abroad (APEVEX) and in support of journalists who are censored and persecuted under the Nicolas Maduro regime.

According to APEVEX, last year 139 media outlets in Venezuela were unable to report news due to various obstacles, including shortage of paper and cyber-attacks. Journalists are often beaten, wrongfully accused of breaking the law and their equipment is broken or stolen to limit their freedom of speech.

Known as the “Ellis Island of the South,” MDC’s Freedom Tower is a National Historic Landmark and symbol of liberty. It was first designed as the headquarters and printing facility for The Miami News newspaper. In the 1960s and 70s, it housed the Cuban Assistance Center serving Cuban refugees seeking political asylum. Today, the Freedom Tower serves as the college’s premier exhibition space and hosts important figures from around the world.
