Miami, Oct. 14, 2016 – Former Presidents, heads of state, and regional leaders will participate in the inaugural program for the Mezerhane Endowed Chair on Thursday, Oct. 20, and ¿Democracias bajo Amenaza?, a conversation regarding the state of democracy and human rights in the Americas on Friday, Oct. 21, at Miami Dade College’s (MDC) Wolfson Campus, in downtown Miami. These special events will be in Spanish and attendance is by invitation only. The working media is welcome.
The former Prime Minister of Spain Jose Maria Aznar, former Costa Rican President Laura Chinchilla, former Colombian Presidents Andres Pastrana and Alvaro Uribe, former Bolivian President Jorge Quiroga, former Uruguayan President Luis Alberto LaCalle, former Mexican President Vicente Fox, Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OEA) Luis Almagro, MDC’s President Dr. Eduardo J. Padrón, Diario Las Americas’ editor Nelson J. Mezerhane, and Iniciativa Democratica de España y Las Americas’ (IDEA) executive director Asdrúbal Aguiar are among the leaders and luminaries who will convene at MDC to discuss the current political and economic situation in the region.
On Thursday, Oct. 20, at 5 p.m., the inaugural program for the Mezerhane Endowed Chair will take place in room 6100, with a panel titled Las tensiones democráticas en las Américas y España moderated by Carme Chacón Piqueras, Spain’s former Minister of Defense and professor in residence at MDC.
On Friday, Oct. 21, at 12:30 p.m., former heads of state and presidents will hold a press conference in the Skylight Room at MDC’s National Historic Landmark Freedom Tower to discuss the state of democracy in the region.
