Miami, FL, Jan. 12, 2021 – Miami Dade College’s (MDC) Honors College will host “To Serve and Protect as One: Connecting Community & Law Enforcement,” a virtual town hall sponsored by MDC’s Racial Equity and Justice Movement and MDC’s Academic Leadership Council, on Monday, Jan. 25, from 5 – 7 p.m. This event is free and open to the public.
This two-hour interactive discussion aims to create an open and honest dialogue about policing in the community highlighting gaps and humanizing responses, as well as further a shared understanding that leads to an examination of pressing issues and improves mutual perceptions of police practices and community responsibilities.
The town hall, which will be moderated by Padrón Campus President Dr. Alanka Brown, will have opening remarks and introductions by Miami Dade College President, Madeline Pumariega. Other panelists will include, Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava, Dr. Bernard Ferguson, author of “Where’s the EQ?: Race and Policing up Close;” Captain Garland Wright, Homestead Police Department; Rodney W. Jacobs, Jr. JD, Assistant Director for the City of Miami Civilian Investigative Panel; Ronald Fulton, Chairperson, Community Relations Board of Miami-Dade County; Justin Pinn, City of Miami, former chair of the Community Advisory Board; Dr. Minca Davis-Brantley, MDC Professor of Psychology; MDC School of Justice Associate Professor Samantha Carlo; and Kalid Gawon, MDC Honors College student.
