Miami, Jan. 22, 2025 – Miami Dade College (MDC) will convene members of the Human Trafficking Task Force, state and local elected officials, and community leaders for a roundtable on human trafficking at noon on Monday, Jan. 27, at MDC North Campus. MDC President Madeline Pumariega will deliver welcome remarks. Working media is welcome.
January is National Human Trafficking Prevention Month, an important time to bring attention to this national crisis. As the state with the third-highest number of reported cases, Florida is working hard to combat human trafficking through education, advocacy and community engagement.
“Human trafficking remains a critical issue in our country and state,” said Miami Dade College President Madeline Pumariega. “It is essential that we all work together to raise public awareness and increase prevention strategies to help save live.”
Following the roundtable, MDC will screen the powerful documentary film “City of Dreams,” directed by Mohit Ramchandani and produced by Manor House Films. Inspired by true events, “City of Dreams” tells the story of a young Mexican boy who is smuggled across the border and sold to a sweatshop in downtown Los Angeles. Supported by prominent advocates such as Tony Robbins, Luis Fonsi and Mira Sorvino, the film highlights the 12 million children trafficked worldwide and calls audiences to action against exploitation.
As part of the partnership with Manor House Films, MDC will host screenings at various campuses, utilizing the film and accompanying educational resources to raise awareness and foster informed action against human trafficking. Learn more at cityofdreamsmovie.com.
