Miami Dade College to Host FIFA State Championship Tournament for the First Time

Miami, Feb. 9, 2018 Miami Dade College’s (MDC) Kendall Campus will host the Florida Intercollegiate Forensics Association (FIFA) State Championship Tournament on Friday – Sunday, Feb. 23 – 25. It’s the first time MDC hosts the tournament. The community is invited to watch the competition free of charge.

The tournament will crown collegiate state champions in 14 different speech events, as well as sweepstakes championships for the top schools in the state. Students will compete in various categories, including Parliamentary Debate, Lincoln-Douglas Debate, Extemporaneous Speaking, Poetry Interpretation, Rhetorical Criticism, After Dinner Speaking, Dramatic Interpretation, Programmed Oral Interpretation, Impromptu Speaking, Prose Interpretation, Duo Interpretation, Informative Speaking, Persuasive Speaking, and Reader’s Theater. Students entered in five events will be eligible to win the Pentathlon Award.

Two and four-year colleges will be eligible to compete. Participating schools include MDC, University of Florida, University of Miami, Lynn University, University of West Florida, University of Central Florida and Broward College, among others.

Registration beings at noon on Friday, Feb. 23, in Room K-413. Parliamentary debate will be featured on Friday, with all other events taking place Saturday and Sunday. The winners will be awarded at 4 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 25, in Room 6120.
