Miami Dade College to Host an Election Extravaganza Oct. 26

Festival highlights the power of people and the value of engagement

Miami, Oct. 3, 2016 – The Institute for Civic Engagement and Democracy and Student Life at Miami Dade College (MDC) will host an Election Extravaganza from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., on Wednesday, Oct. 26, at MDC’s Wolfson Campus.  As part of the Joy Voting Initiative organized by the Citizen University, the celebration seeks to reinvigorate and promote political engagement in Miami.

The festival will bring mock elections, entertainment, performers, voter education and will culminate with students and community members taking the “Vote Train” to Government Center to early vote.

Miami-Dade voter turnout has, for the past ten years, been decreasing exponentially.  Joy of Voting projects in Miami aim to increase participation and shift cultural attitudes around voting through diverse programming and events.  Election Extravaganza was one of five projects selected by Citizen University with support from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, which granted each winner $3600 for local-voting related events in Miami.
