Miami, Sept. 28, 2018 – South Florida is the metro area with the highest percentage of low-income renters who can’t find affordable housing, according to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. In an effort to address this issue, Miami Dade College (MDC) will host two engaging panels featuring affordable and fair housing experts Monday and Tuesday, Oct. 1 – 2, at the Homestead and Wolfson Campuses. Working media is welcome.
When families are overburdened with excessively high housing costs, it affects their ability to focus and spend on other basic needs such as food, transportation and health. Add to this the reality of discriminatory practices and the cycle becomes crippling. The panel will focus on ways that the Fair Housing Act and HUD are helping to protect families and safeguard key legal aspects of fair housing litigation. The event will also be a great opportunity to learn about programs and volunteer opportunities that support affordable and fair housing in South Florida.
Panelists will include Keenya J. Robertson, Esq., President & CEO of Housing Opportunities Project for Excellence; Veronica Harrell-James, Deputy Chief of the General Civil Litigation Division of the United States Attorney’s Office, Southern District of Florida; and James N. Sutton, Special Assistant, FHEO Office of Policy, Legislative Initiatives & Outreach.
