South Miami Police Chief Rene Landa will lead a ceremony at the North Campus, where two steel artifacts from the World Trade Center are located.
Miami, August 31, 2022 – Miami Dade College (MDC) will commemorate the 21st anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, remembering the nearly 3,000 lives lost in New York City, Arlington, and Shanksville, as well as the heroes and survivors, with ceremonies and events at various campuses. On Thursday September 8, at 8:30 a.m. South Miami Police Department Chief Rene Landa will lead a Ceremony of Reflection at the North Campus West Lawn Plaza, located at 11380 NW 27th Ave, near Building 400.
MDC North Campus is home to two steel artifacts from the World Trade Center donated to MDC by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. These permanently installed fixtures serve as a tribute to all those who lost their lives in the terror attacks and also to America’s resilience.
The ceremony is presented in collaboration with MDC’s School of Justice, the Fire Science Program, Student Government Association and Student Life.

Starting Monday, Sept. 5 (various events)
Activities begin on Monday, Sept. 5, with a week of good deeds. Then, on Wednesday, Sept. 7 there will be a Teacher Day of Service where students are encouraged to be ambassadors for a day to help staff and faculty. On Wednesday, Sept. 7 and Thursday, Sept. 8 current students who are first responders (with photo ID) will receive tickets for a free lunch from Uncle Boo’s Catfish Corner along with a thank you note written by students and staff.
Kendall Campus

Thursday, Sept. 8, 9 -10 a.m.
Miami-Dade Fire Rescue Station 53 Suppression will be on site to raise the American Flag in honor of those who perished during the 9/11 attacks. Attendees will have the opportunity to hear from first responders and military heroes who were active on ground zero and will recall the aftermath of 9/11. Event organized by Student Government Association and Student Life.
West Campus

Student Life will create an informational display and replica of the Twin Towers dedicated to the lives lost by the 9/11 attacks. The area will be converted into a reflective space to quietly pay tribute to those victims, survivors, and families affected by the tragedy. Students are encouraged to visit the memorial to learn more about the events that occurred, and share their thoughts about what the day means to them on a reflection board.
Wolfson Campus
Day of service at Marjorie Stoneman Douglas Biscayne Nature Center

Sept. 10, 9 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.
Students will honor the lives of the 9/11 victims and their families by serving and giving back to the community. To continue the commitment to environmental sustainability, the Wolfson Campus’ Student Government Association and Inter Club Council members have partnered for the fifth consecutive year, with Clean Miami Beach, Debris Free Oceans, Zoo Miami, and Miami-Dade Parks and Recreation to serve on a day-long coastal cleanup. Through this organized event, students will receive in-depth training on the negative impact of single-use plastics and other trash on the earth’s ecology, and have the opportunity to participate in meaningful hands-on team-building activities and data collection. This year’s activity has been scaled up to include 100 students collegewide, in collaboration with MDC’s Institute of Civic Engagement and Democracy (iCED). Students are also encouraged to complete their iCED civic action scorecard followed by a reflection piece on the significance of their service on this day. The Medical Campus will screen United 93, a 2006 docudrama thriller film written and directed by Paul Greengrass. The movie is a real-time account of the events on United Flight 93, one of the planes hijacked on Sept. 11 that crashed near Shanksville, Pennsylvania when passengers foiled the terrorist plot.
