Miami, June 6, 2017 – Miami Dade College’s (MDC) Wolfson Campus, in partnership with Human Rights Committee, MDC’s REVEST Program, and the Miami-Dade Refugee Task Force, will host a World Refugee Day event on Wednesday, June 14, at 10 a.m. It will include presentations, a panel discussion, and a concert that will highlight the contributions of refugees to this nation. Refugee services organizations will also be on hand.
MDC Wolfson and Hialeah Campuses President Dr. Joaquin Martínez will deliver opening remarks. The panel discussion will include Director of Office of Refugee Services for the State of Florida Patti Grogan, and St. Thomas University Human Rights Institute Director Christine Reis.
Following the panel, a concert with former REVEST students, will take place at the breezeway in building 2. Several Miami-Dade County agencies will be on location to provide information on refugee services.
Each year on June 20, the United Nations, United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR) and countless civic groups around the world celebrate World Refugee Day events in order to draw the public’s attention to the millions of refugees worldwide who have been forced to flee their homes due to war, conflict and persecution and to their immeasurable contributions to society.
The annual commemoration is marked by a variety of events in more than 100 countries, involving government officials, humanitarian aid workers, celebrities, civilians and the forcibly displaced themselves.
