Miami Dade College Summer Journalism Speaker Series Presents WSVN Reporter and MDC Alumna Alex de Armas

Miami, June 17, 2016 –  WSVN 7 reporter Alex de Armas, will speak at the 2016 Miami Dade College (MDC) Summer Journalism Speaker Series at 2:30 p.m., Thursday, June 30, at MDC’s Wolfson Campus.

De Armas, who served as the North Campus Bureau Chief for The Reporter during its inaugural year in 2010—as a print news writer and video journalist—is currently a morning reporter for WSVN 7.

A practicing journalist for nearly a decade, de Armas has interviewed various prestigious figures including former United States Secretary of State Madeleine Albright, former Pentagon spokeswoman Victoria Clarke, and journalist and political correspondent Larry Kane. She received an AP Award for her exclusive coverage on Zac Reyna’s battle against a brain-eating amoeba.

Before joining WSVN, de Armas worked as a general assignment reporter at WBBH in Fort Myers and WCJB TV 20, in Gainesville, Fl. Born and raised in Miami, she graduated from the University of Florida with a degree in journalism and from MDC’s North Campus Honors College.

The MDC Journalism Speaker Series was launched in February 2008 to create an exchange and learning opportunity for students interested in pursuing careers in journalism. To date, 52 journalists have participated in the series.    Participating later this summer are Washington Post graphics editor, Lazaro Gamio, NBC 6 reporter, Melissa Adan, and El Nuevo Herald reporter, Sergio Cándido. All speakers have served as editors for MDC student newspapers in the past six years.

Each program includes a presentation by the journalists and a 15-minute question and answer session. All presentations are free and open to the public.
