Miami Dade College Students to Receive Frances Wolfson Art Scholarships at Awards Luncheon May 11

Original paintings, acrylic drawings and mixed media, among winning submissions

Miami, May 9, 2016 – In honor of the late South Florida artist and philanthropist, the Miami Dade College (MDC) Foundation will host its annual Frances Wolfson Art Scholarships Awards Luncheon at noon, Wednesday, May 11, at the Wolfson Campus in downtown Miami. The event is by invitation only, but is open to the working media.

The year’s winners are Carla Patricia Camejo, Laura Hernandez, Maria Alejandra Idarraga, Elyssa Llanso and Rebecka Rios.  The winning art submissions include original paintings, drawings in acrylic, charcoal and mixed media.

More than 200 Frances Wolfson Art Scholarships have been presented to MDC and New World School of the Arts visual arts students since the scholarship was initiated in 1964. Each recipient receives $1,500 that will be used for tuition, books, fees, and necessary art supplies for the next academic year.

The late Frances Wolfson was an internationally renowned artist and Miami civic and cultural leader, whose cultural influence in South Florida spans nearly 50 years. Her works have been shown at many solo exhibitions, reproduced by a major greeting card company, selected by the U.S. Information Agency for a tour of Asia, and exhibited in numerous public buildings. In 1964, using the proceeds from the sale of her paintings, she established the scholarship fund to help student artists. In 1980, the Miami-Dade Community College District Board of Trustees named the art gallery at the Wolfson Campus the Frances Wolfson Art Gallery, in recognition of the outstanding service and contributions she made to the community and the world of art.

To be considered for the award students submit portfolios of their visual artwork, which is reviewed by a panel of judges from MDC’s faculty. Students must be first-year full-time students eligible to enter their sophomore year of studies and in good academic standing.

The Miami Dade College Foundation supports the mission and values of MDC by encouraging gifts from a wide variety of sources, particularly in the areas of scholarship and program support.
