Miami Dade College Students and Faculty Excel in Advancing Humanities and Undergraduate Research on the National Stage

Miami, April 18, 2022Miami Dade College (MDC) students and their faculty mentors are making waves at national platforms for undergraduate research and accelerating academic excellence and innovation. This spring semester, students and faculty in the humanities will convene for the fifth Humanities Edge Undergraduate Research Virtual (HE-URP) Symposium at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, April 19, at MDC Wolfson Campus.

Each semester the HE-URP matches undergraduate student researchers with faculty mentors and librarians to develop student-led research projects. Sixty-four students at seven MDC campuses have completed the program so far. In addition, sixteen student researchers from seven MDC campuses participated at premier national conferences, including the Humanities Education and Research Association Annual Conference, the National Conference on Undergraduate Research, and Johns Hopkins 2022 Richard Macksey National Undergraduate Humanities Symposium. The program is also being represented at the annual conferences for the Humanities Education Research Association, the National Organization for Student Success and the National Institute for Staff and Organizational Development International Conference on Teaching and Leadership Excellence. The Humanities Edge program supports these initiatives through the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation grant.

“The scope of national representation and highlights of the creativity of MDC students is unprecedented in the Humanities. We are grateful to the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation for their commitment and support of our students and institution, and I commend each of our students, faculty mentors, learning resource professionals and librarians for their initiative and dedication,” said Dr. Michaela Tomova, MDC Vice Provost for Academic Affairs and PI for the Humanities Edge program.

“Research in the humanities promises a space where dialogue and expression can be appreciated,” says Kirk Paskal, the Humanities Edge grant director, who characterizes the HE-URP Symposium as “a catalytic event where the interplay between research and human knowledge brings forth thought-provoking discussion in the humanities. All of this is brought to life by our undergraduate students who tackle complicated and thought-provoking topics. Our students’ projects have been recognized and applauded on the national stage. We are proud of the positive impact and legacy they have brought to our program.”
