Miami Dade College Student Yaacov Moshe Selected for One-Year Scholarship to Study in China

Miami, April 11, 2014 – One of Miami Dade College’s (MDC) most enthusiastic  language students, Yaacov Moshe, was awarded a one-year scholarship to study at a university in China this fall. The Chinese Government Scholarship, awarded to the 22-year-old foreign languages major, is one of the most prestigious and highly selective awards sponsored by China’s Ministry of Education.

A student at MDC’s InterAmerican Campus, Moshe has mastered all four levels of Mandarin language courses offered at MDC through the College’s Confucius Institute (CI). Since entering MDC in 2010, Moshe has studied Chinese, Russian, Spanish, French and Japanese. In 2011, Moshe was among a group of MDC students awarded a year-long scholarship from the Beijing-based Confucius Institute Headquarters/Hanban to study at Jiangsu Normal University, MDC’s partner university in China.

“As a child, I always dreamed of traveling the world to understand other languages and cultures,” said Moshe. “Mandarin Chinese is important because China is a major player in the business world and has over a billion people in its population, so just knowing Chinese allows you to communicate with one out of five people worldwide.”

Moshe is the second MDC nominated to receive the Chinese Government Scholarship by MDC President Dr. Eduardo J. Padrón. Provided in conjunction with China’s Consulate General in Houston, the award pays for tuition and living expenses in China. With guidance from MDC’s CI, Moshe will apply to a leading university in China that accepts the award and embark on yet another language and cultural immersion experience.

“Student success is at the heart of the CI’s Chinese-language and cultural programs. Yaacov is an excellent example of our program, and his success in learning Chinese and other foreign languages will be an inspiration for many other students at MDC,” said Dr. Jim Yu, director at the CI.

The Confucius Institute has been instrumental in helping students secure educational and travel opportunities in China.
