Miami Dade College Selected for Excelencia in Education’s 2022 Implementing Evidence-Based Practices Institute

Miami, May 10, 2022 – Miami Dade College (MDC) recently participated in Excelencia in Education’s 2022 Implementing Evidence-Based Practices Institute, which selected only ten institutions nationwide to participate. The organization works to accelerate Latino student success in higher education and significantly increase the number of Latino students earning college degrees.

MDC educators from a variety of disciplines and several campuses participated in the Evidence-Based Practices Institute, including Dr. Jaime Bestard, Mathematics, Hialeah Campus (Faculty Lead); Dr. Trinidad Arguelles, Social Sciences, West Campus; Professor Carola Pedreschi, Social Sciences, North Campus; Professor Emily Sendin, English, Padrón Campus; and Dr. Selwyn Williams, Natural Sciences, North Campus.

The Evidence-Based Practices Institute drew upon Excelencia’s experience of more than 15 years with evidence-based practices that work for Latino students. The Institute offered faculty guidance on incorporating quality, equity and evidence of effectiveness into their institutional practices and programs to more intentionally accelerate Latino, and all, student success.

Through an intentional approach in the delivery of technical assistance, the Institute provided interactive sessions by leaders in higher education to enhance institutional efforts to serve Latino students; asset-based discussions on data, practice, leadership, and policy; dedicated team time that developed institutional action plans to develop evidence-based practices; and opportunities to continue engaging, learning, and collaborating with peer teams as part of a community of practitioners.
