Miami Dade College Receives $2.5M in Federal Grants to Assist Low-Income Students Achieve High School and College Completion

Miami, June 8, 2017- Miami Dade College (MDC) recently received more than $2.5 million in federal grants to support Upward Bound programs designed to help low-income students achieve high school graduation and postsecondary success.

The Homestead Campus will receive $1,287,500 from the U.S. Department of Education during a five-year period to serve 60 predominantly low-income, potentially first-generation-college students from Homestead Senior High School (HSHS) in Homestead.  Services include intensive case management, secondary and postsecondary academic advisement, financial aid advisement, face-to-face and online tutoring, supplemental instruction, “near-peer” mentoring by MDC student participants, study and life skills workshops for students and parents/guardians, college tours, and career-related and cultural enrichment activities.

The North Campus will receive $1,287,500 from the U.S. Department of Education to serve 60 disadvantaged students annually at North Miami Beach Senior High School. Students will be provided with academic tutoring, exposure to cultural events, mentoring, career services, individualized counseling, supplemental instruction, advice and assistance in secondary and postsecondary course selection, college entrance exam preparation, information on and assistance with federal financial aid, secondary school reentry assistance, alternative education opportunities, and financial literacy counseling.
