Miami Dade College Presents the 2012 Harvest Moon Festival

Miami, September 18, 2012The Confucius Institute (CI) at Miami Dade College(MDC) will host its 3rd Harvest Moon Festival at 11 a.m. Wednesday, September 19, at the college’s Wolfson Campus, with a Chinese calligraphy demonstration, performances, Chinese mooncake tasting and a panel discussion on study abroad and scholarship programs in China in 2013.

The Harvest Moon Festival is one of the most important holidays in China, second only to the Chinese New Year. It is the Chinese “family reunion day” in which Chinese families and friends gather to spend time together, admire the bright, full harvest moon and eat mooncakes.

The festivities include Chinese folk dancing and singing and musical performances by local professional and student artists. Martial arts demonstrations and a fashion show will be provided by students of Chinese language classes and international students from Community College Initiative Program (CCIP) at MDC. Chinese refreshments with tea and mooncakes will follow the arts show.

After the stage performances, five MDC students will lead a panel discussion on exploring China through study abroad programs at MDC. Those students will share their learning and living experiences in China, after taking CI’s summer, semester or year-long programs, or Professor Robert Foran’s Economics Study Abroad program in Shanghai. An update on Confucius Institute scholarship opportunities for MDC students in 2013 will also be provided.

By offering credit and non-credit courses, lectures, and special events, the Confucius Institute at Miami Dade College promotes the study of Chinese language and culture, and enhances international education, cross-cultural understanding, and global citizenship in our community.
