Miami, Feb. 13, 2025 – The Cuban Cinema Series, presented by Miami Dade College’s acclaimed Miami Film Festival, will showcase the documentary film “En un rincón del alma (In One Corner of the Soul)” by renowned director Jorge Dalton at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 27, at MDC’s Koubek Center in Little Havana. Admission is free and open to the public with reservation.
The film is about the poet, writer, and screenwriter Eliseo Alberto Diego (Lichi), who recounts the struggles of his legendary family of writers and artists within the cultural, social, and political landscape of Cuba spanning half a century since Castro took power in 1959. Lichi shares his personal experience from the perspective of a generation of young creators deceived by promises of sovereignty and progress, which quickly spiraled into a sinister cycle of totalitarian communist repression.
Lichi wrote the script for Tomás Gutiérrez Alea’s final film “Guantanamera” (1997) and wrote “Informe contra mí mismo (Testimony Against Myself),” a harrowing account of the Castro regime’s police demanding that he denounce his own family. He won the 1998 Alfaguara Prize for his novel “Caracol Beach.”
Salvadoran documentary filmmaker Dalton studied in Cuba and has an outstanding filmography, including “Herido de sombras (1994),” about one of the survivors of the legendary Cuban music group Los Zafiros, living in poverty just before his death. Dalton currently resides in San Salvador and serves as Director of Cinema at the Ministry of Culture of the Government of El Salvador. He is a member of the Advisory Team of the Cine Libertad project.
