Miami Dade College Presents Convergence, a Black History Month Exhibition by Fred Thomas (Efté)

Miami, FL – Feb. 2, 2026 — Miami Dade College (MDC) presents Convergence, a solo exhibition by Haitian American artist Fred Thomas, also known as Efté, on view throughout Black History Month at the West Campus Gallery (Room 1105).

The exhibition features a compelling body of paintings and non-standing sculptural works that explore culture, history, and contemporary Black identity through powerful visual storytelling rooted in the African diaspora and the South Florida experience. An opening reception will take place on Monday, February 2, at 9:30 a.m. This exhibit is free and open to students, faculty, staff, and the community at large.

Born in Fort-Liberté, Haiti, and raised in Cap-Haïtien, Fred Thomas received his early education at Frères de L’Instruction Chrétienne and Collège Notre-Dame before moving to Port-au-Prince for private fine art studies at the Centre d’Art and the Centre de Céramique. After relocating to Miami, he enrolled in the Art Education program at Miami Dade College. He later earned a bachelor’s degree in religion and philosophy from Union Institute & University and a master’s degree in psychology from Carlos Albizu University. Since 1990, Fred has pursued his artistic career with dedication, presenting his work in numerous solo and group exhibitions and currently serving as an artist-in-residence at Art South of Homestead, while also teaching, promoting visual arts, and advocating for Haitian artists in South Florida. He defines his artistic approach as “Integrative Symbolism,” an all-encompassing style that encourages self-discovery and artistic freedom through the integration of multiple techniques, genres, metaphors, symbols, cultural icons, collage, and found objects. His body of work spans surrealism, cubist-inspired compositions, primitivistic figures in imagined landscapes, and, more recently, abstraction—each phase reflecting his evolving visual language, imagination, and pursuit of balance and harmony.
