Miami Dade College Once Again Hosts Future Bankers Camp

Miami, June 26, 2023 – Miami Dade College (MDC) President Madeline Pumariega helped kick off the 16th Annual Future Bankers and Financial Services Camp for high school students interested in careers within the financial services sector. The program – including an online educational component and in-person internship – culminates with a graduation ceremony on Thursday, July 27.

The Future Bankers Campus provides various educational opportunities for students to enhance their math, communication and financial literacy skills and attain industry certification with the goal of preparing them for college and careers in financial services. Participants will receive Bank Teller Training and, upon completion, the American Bankers Association (ABA) Bank Teller Certificate. Students who graduate will also earn summer school credits and can apply for dual enrollment credits toward an associate degree from MDC and receive National Academy Foundation (NAF) Certification.

This year, the program welcomed over 135 students enrolled in Academy of Finance/Business programs at Miami-Dade County Public High Schools, as well as visiting students from Camden, NJ and Hartford, CT. Schools participating in the program include, Barbara Goleman Senior High School, Camden Academy Charter High School, Camden High School (JROCT), Camden Prep High School, Coral Gables Senior High School, Coral Reef Senior High School, Danbury High School, Dr. Michael M. Krop Senior High School, East Harford High School, Hialeah Gardens Senior High School, Miami Beach Senior High School, Miami Killian Senior High School, Miami Lakes Educational Center, Miami Sunset Senior High School, New Britain High School, North Miami Senior High School, North Miami Beach Senior High School, Pathways Academy of Technology & Design, Scheck Hillel Community School, School for Advanced Studies, South Dade Senior High School,  Weaver High School and William H. Turner Technical Arts High School.

The program is a collaboration between MDC’s Miguel B. Fernandez Family School of Global  Business, Trade and Transportation, MDC’s School of Continuing Education and Professional Development, the Center for Financial Training International, the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC), the Federal Reserve Bank – Miami Branch & Philadelphia, CareerSource South Florida, the Cuban American National Council (CNC), Miami-Dade County Public School, Department of Career and Technical Education,  NAF – Academy of Finance, Camden & Connecticut School Districts, Rowan University – CHAMP/GEAR UP Program and Rutgers University.

The Miami-Dade County Public Schools Academy of Finance program is a member of the National Academy Foundation (NAF), a national network of career academies to support the development of America’s youth toward personal and professional success in high school, higher education and throughout their careers.

CareerSource South Florida is a public-private partnership and integral partner in Miami-Dade’s economic plan that initiates state and federally funded workforce development and training policies for Miami-Dade and Monroe counties. CNC is a nonprofit organization providing human services to persons in need from all racial and ethnic groups.  CNC assists individuals to become self-reliant and builds bridges among America’s diverse communities.

The Center for Financial Training International at MDC provides financial services education, training and technology to financial services professionals throughout the United States and around the world.  CFT is a national organization and the largest industry-sponsored adult education program in the world.  CFT training and education programs provide job specific skills and knowledge to the financial services industry and pre-career students.  CFT is the educational arm of the American Bankers Association and courses are part of a national continuing education curriculum.  Completion of prescribed programs can lead to national industry-recognized ABA/CFT diplomas and certificates as well as assist in professional licensing requirements and meet college credit and degree requirements.
