Miami Dade College Observes Memorial Day with a Week of Events

Miami, May 24,  2021 — In commemoration of Memorial Day, Miami Dade College’s (MDC) Student Life division joins the nation’s remembrance of fallen soldiers and pays tribute to the country’s heroes with a week of college-wide activities May 24-28.

Events will include writing letters and messages of encouragement for U.S. troops deployed all over the world. The MDC community can participate in this initiative of the Forgotten Soldiers Outreach Organization by visiting https://tinyurl.com/arte358. Missives will be included in care packages sent to the soldiers. Students may also share tributes on social media with #BeMDC.

Additionally, Student Life will coordinate the installation of Missing Man tables throughout all MDC campuses honoring fallen, missing, or imprisoned military service members.  Finally, students can partake in this celebration virtually at https://sharknet.mdc.edu/news/226242, where they will find various ways to learn, engage, and give back this Memorial Day.

Originally known as Decoration Day, Memorial Day is an American holiday, observed on the last Monday of May, honoring the men and women who died while serving in the U.S. military. It originated in the years following the Civil War and became an official federal holiday in 1971. Many Americans observe Memorial Day by visiting cemeteries or memorials, holding family gatherings, and participating in parades.
