Miami Dade College North Campus to Commemorate Constitution Day

Miami, Sept. 9, 2016- Miami Dade College’s (MDC) North Campus will celebrate Constitution Day on Thursday, Sept. 15 and Friday, Sept. 16, with several events honoring the federal observance that recognizes our country’s citizens, as well as the day the U.S. Constitutional Convention signed the Constitution in 1787. These events are free and open to the public.

“In tribute, the North Campus community will join in conversation and reflection on values and ideals such as human rights, equality, and justice for all,” said North Campus President Dr. Malou C. Harrison.

The Commemoration kicks off on Thursday, Sept. 15 at 10 a.m., in Lecture Hall, room 2147, with a lecture titled “Celebrating America’s Bill of Rights” presented by Professor Patti K. Harris, Army Veteran and Anthropologist.  “Constitution Day: We the People” will take place immediately after at the North Campus’ Lehman Theater (Bldg. 5) at 11:30 a.m.  Participants will have the opportunity to pose questions to a panel on a variety of constitutional issues. Panelists will include the Honorable Judge Don Cohn, Civil Division of Miami-Dade County; the Honorable Judge Victoria Ferrer, Criminal Division of Miami-Dade County; and Dr. Richard Patiño of Patiño Law Firm.

On Friday, Sept. 16, the North Campus will also host the James Otis Lecture Series for more than 300 students from Miami-Dade County Public Schools (MDCPS). The event, presented by the American Board of Trial Advocates (ABOTA), is designed to educate students about the founding of the U.S. Constitution as well as its implications for present day society.   Special guest speakers include the Honorable Circuit Court Judge Stanford Blake and Charles H. Baumberger, ABOTA National President Elect.

Constitution Day honors the rights and liberties granted and protected by the nation’s supreme law. Copies of the U.S. Constitution will be distributed to all Constitution Day attendees at the North Campus.
