Miami, Oct. 11, 2022 – Miami Dade College (MDC) has been honored with a Fulbright Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI) Leader award for demonstrating noteworthy engagement with the Fulbright Program by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA). MDC is one of 43 HSIs recognized for its strong commitment to international exchange and building lasting connections between people in the U.S. and people in other countries
Created last year, the Fulbright HSI Leader Award recognizes the strong partnerships between the Fulbright Program and selected HSIs, and encourages all HSIs to increase engagement with Fulbright. The initiative is part of a longstanding commitment to build diversity and inclusion within the Fulbright Program and within all of its international exchange programs.
The Fulbright Program was established in 1946 as the flagship international educational exchange program sponsored by the U.S. government. The Fulbright Program is funded through an annual appropriation made by the U.S. Congress to the U.S. Department of State. Participating governments and host institutions, corporations, and foundations around the world also provide direct and indirect support to the Program, which operates in over 160 countries worldwide.
The program has given more than 400,000 students, scholars, teachers, artists, and scientists the opportunity to study, teach and conduct research, exchange ideas, and contribute to finding solutions to shared international concerns. It addresses critical global issues in all disciplines, while building relationships, knowledge, and leadership in support of the long-term interests of the United States. Fulbright alumni have achieved distinction in many fields, including 60 who have been awarded the Nobel Prize, 88 who have received Pulitzer Prizes, and 39 who have served as a head of state or government.
