Miami Dade College Launches Institute for Freedom in the Americas at IX Presidential Dialogue and Opens Applications for 2025 Inaugural Fellows Class

Miami, Oct. 16, 2024 – Miami Dade College (MDC) launched its new Institute for Freedom in the Americas, a groundbreaking initiative to provide academic programs and resources that support future generations of policymakers. The Institute will be announced at the IX Presidential Dialogue of IDEA Group on October 17, 2024.

Presidential Dialogue, an annual global forum designed to explore geopolitical, economic and social challenges facing the Western Hemisphere, has been hosted by the College for almost a decade and will now have an official home as part of the Institute. Building on this track record, the Institute aims to promote the significance of economic and individual freedoms in advancing human progress, with a particular focus on Latin America and the Caribbean. With a focus on leadership development, policy research, and civic education, the Institute brings together a diverse community of experts, policymakers, and leaders to support and advance the cause of freedom

“The Institute for Freedom in the Americas is committed to creating an environment where experienced leaders can enhance their impact, collaborate with others, and be inspired by those who have shaped the path toward freedom and democracy,” said MDC President Madeline Pumariega. “As we launch this Fellowship, we invite accomplished individuals from across the Americas to join us in advancing democratic values and building a stronger, more resilient future.”

“I am truly honored to be a part of the Institute for Freedom in the Americas,” said Carlos Alberto Duart. “This collaboration between Miami Dade College and Florida International University stands as a testament to our shared mission of advancing democratic values across the Western Hemisphere. Miami Dade College is one of the driving forces of our South Florida community, and it is an honor to bring my expertise and enthusiasm to the Board of the Institute for Freedom in the Americas.”

“As someone who fled fled communism, I deeply understand the importance of freedom and opportunity,” said Ismare Monreal. “In my role as a Board of Trustee member and now as a member on the Board of the Institute for Freedom in the Americas, I am proud to be part of Miami Dade College’s commitment to serving as a catalyst for empowering students to become champions of democratic values and stewards of a brighter future for our community and beyond.”

Inaugural Leadership Fellowship
As part of its inauguration, the Institute is now accepting applications for its inaugural class of Fellows. The Institute for Freedom in the Americas Fellowship is a prestigious year-long program designed to engage established leaders in a dynamic curriculum focused on strengthening leadership skills, advancing democratic resilience, and promoting economic freedom. Selected Fellows will engage with leading scholars, policymakers, and former heads of state, gaining hands-on experience while exploring the complex issues facing democracy in the region.

The Fellowship will include interactive seminars, experiential learning opportunities, and a structured mentoring program. Fellows will also contribute to the Institute’s thought leadership initiatives, culminating in a capstone proposal that reflects their experience and their vision for advancing freedom in their home countries.
