Miami Dade College Celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month with Powerful and Enriching Events at All Campuses

Miami, Sept. 14, 2018 – In celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, Miami Dade College’s (MDC) eight campuses will host dynamic events throughout the month of October, including art exhibitions, live performances, lectures, food tastings, and more! Unless otherwise noted, all events are free and open the public.

Ameyal Mexican Cultural Organization Dance Company  
Tuesday, Oct. 16, 6 – 7 p.m.

The word ameyal means “spring water” in the Nahuatl language, and this is what the dancers represent in their performance: “a spring that flows from our roots and our traditions to the depths of our hearts.”

Carnival and Paella

LGBTQ in the Hispanic Community

In observance of the national discourse, the Yes! Institute of Miami will be opening a dialogue about
lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ) issues in Hispanic culture. Resources for LGBTQ individuals will also be discussed. Hosted by Dr. Shannon Kennedy

Influential Hispano Americanos: A Portrait Exhibition
of Artists and Writers

Join us to celebrate the influences of Hispanic artists
and writers in American arts. Local artist Mariana Altamirano is presenting an exhibition of portraits of famous Hispanic writers and artists. She will lecture on the creative process of each piece. Altamirano is accompanied by poet and song writer Orlando Coré, and poet Mario Rosales, who will delight the audience by reading poems from their published works. Light refreshments will be served. The opening and exhibition are free and open to the public. Hosted by the Hispanic Heritage Committee. Sponsored by the office of Campus Administration. La Copa Culinaria: Desserts of the Americas Competition

Do you think you make the best dessert in all the Americas? Then bring enough of your famous sweet for 20 people, and our staff and students will vote on it. Mexican Independence Day

A Kendall Campus tradition for 13 years, in collaboration with the consul general of Mexico in Miami, commemorates over two centuries of Mexican Independence. Students, faculty, staff, and local community members are invited to celebrate the ‘Grito de Dolores’ by participating in, and enjoying, a mosaic array of Mexican cultural events, which includes live music from mariachis, dances and food.
