Miami Dade College Celebrates Haitian Heritage Month with Events

Miami, May 11, 2017 – Miami Dade College (MDC) will commemorate Haitian Heritage Month and Haitian Flag Day throughout the month of May with special events at several MDC campuses and its outreach center, including keynote addresses by television personality Lourvenante “Lulu” Orange-Tyson and E-nnovative Health founder Stephane Elias, a culinary tasting event, book festival, and more!  All events offer free admission and are open to the public.

On Saturday, May 13, 3 – 10 p.m., the North Campus, in partnership with Miami-Dade County Commissioner Jean Monestime (District 2), will host the Taste of Haiti celebration of Haiti’s culinary and cultural heritage. Activities also include music, arts and more. Location: North Campus, 11380 N.W. 27th Ave., Lot 2.

The Haitian Boukan Club at the Wolfson Campus will host a celebration on Wednesday, May 17, outside Building 2. Location: Wolfson Campus, 300 N.E. Second Ave.

In addition, motivational speaker and television personality Lourvenante “Lulu” Orange-Tyson will speak at the North Campus on Wednesday, May 17, at 11 a.m. A South Florida native, Orange-Tyson had her first radio and TV show appearance at age 14. She is also an admissions director and a nurse liaison in Palm Beach County, which serves three rehabilitation centers. Through mentorship, empowerment and community service, she instills positive core values in our youth so that they can be successful in their future endeavors. Location: 11380 N.W. 27th Ave.

The Homestead Campus will celebrate Haitian Flag Day, from noon – 1 p.m. on Thursday, May 18. The event will feature performances by Dance a L, poetry readings, music, traditional dishes, and resources for the community.  Location: Homestead Campus, 500 College Terrace, Student Life Patio.

E-nnovative Health founder Stephane Elias will deliver a keynote at 11 a.m. on Thursday, May 19, at MDC’s Carrie P. Meek Entrepreneurial Education Center. His company provides healthcare organizations with practical strategies on how to effectively engage with their patients. He began his journey in the healthcare industry as a student intern with Broward Health and served at the Center for Haitian Studies, Health & Human Services, duly registered non-profit health and social service organization serving the disenfranchised populations of Little Haiti/Little River. Location: 6300 N.W. 7th Ave.

MDC’s Miami Book Fair, in partnership with Sosyete Koukouy of Miami, Inc., will present the Little Haiti Book Festival on Saturday and Sunday, May 27-28, at the Little Haiti Cultural Complex. The book festival features two days of author presentations, literary panels, workshops, activities for children, a film screening, and performers as part of the Miami Book Fair’s ReadCaribbean programming.
