Miami Dade College Celebrates 2019 National Library Week

MIAMI, March 1, 2019 – The Learning Resources department at Miami Dade College (MDC) will once again celebrate National Library Week with various events from April 8-12, honoring the 2019 theme: “Libraries = Strong Communities.” Unless otherwise noted, all events are free and open to the public.

National Library Week Events at MDC:

Monday, April 8
Using Empathy to Build Strong Communities

Learning Resources will host a talk titled Empathy: The Cost of Switching Sides as part of the Great Stories Club (GSC) special events series. This event will be hosted by the GSC director, Israel Sanchez in collaboration with Linda Levin, coordinator for the Institute for Civic Engagement and Democracy, Homestead Campus.

Game of Thrones Escape Room Event

Students will commence the week’s celebration with a Game of Thrones-themed Escape Room activity. Librarians will assist students in saving the city of Westeros by solving a series of puzzles with a library and GOT clues.

Students, faculty, and staff are invited to visit Learning Resources for a meet and greet with the library staff.  Refreshments will be available.  A pin will be presented to a library staff member recognizing his or her excellent work and dedication to the success of the Hialeah Campus Learning Resources.

Students can register to join a team or compete on their own team.  The team who solves the puzzle and breaks out first will win a prize.

Screening of Nerd Soup’s “Game of Thrones – Top 10 Best & Worst Changes from the Books”

Library staff will compete in wacky, not-so-athletic challenges such as balancing stacks of books on their heads and maneuvering book carts through mazes. Fun is sure to be had by both participants and spectators. Medals will be awarded.
