Miami Dade College and Collins Aerospace Launch Machine Operator Apprenticeship Program

Miami, July 30, 2025 – In an effort to close the growing talent gap in the high-tech manufacturing sector, Miami Dade College (MDC), in partnership with Collins Aerospace, announced a new Machine Operator Registered Apprenticeship Program. The first cohort will begin in the fall semester.

“As Miami Dade College remains committed to providing relevant, high-quality education and training, we’re excited about this new partnership with Collins Aerospace to develop skilled talent in the aerospace industry,” said Dr. Malou C. Harrison, MDC Executive Vice President and Provost.

MDC offers a variety of in-demand apprenticeships that lead to high-paying jobs, building momentum as a viable solution for industries facing urgent labor shortages. The Machine Operator apprenticeship arrives at a critical time, as a large share of the current manufacturing workforce is nearing retirement age and demand is soaring. On average, the median salary for an aerospace machinist is about $56,000, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor. Employment is projected to grow 8% by 2033.

“There is a national demand for qualified machinists as automation and advanced manufacturing continues to grow,” said Carlos Castillo, Operations Site Lead at Collins Aerospace. “At the same time, the current workforce is aging. Through this partnership with MDC, we are mentoring new generations of skilled workers while establishing a sustainable pipeline for the future.”

Unlike traditional academic programs, apprenticeships blend paid full-time employment with classroom instruction at no cost to the apprentice. Participants receive wages, benefits, and mentorship from industry professionals, removing major financial barriers while gaining real-world experience. Over the course of the one-year program, apprentices will work side-by-side with seasoned mentors who provide technical training and professional development.

MDC simplifies the path for employers to participate—managing the registration process and offering wraparound support including curriculum resources, tools and supplies. Employers have access to incentives such as reduced recruitment costs and wage reimbursements in partnership with CareerSource South Florida.

“Apprenticeship programs are an investment in both individuals and industries,” said Dr. Alexia Rolle, Dean of Career and Technical Education at MDC. “They offer participants hands-on experience and a debt-free pathway to high-wage, high-demand careers, while giving employers a tailored, skilled workforce. These partnerships not only solve immediate labor needs but fuel long-term economic resilience and innovation.”
