Miami, May 12, 2017 – As part of the New Americans Campaign (Miami NAC), Miami Dade College (MDC), in partnership with Catholic Legal Services, the Florida Immigrant Coalition, and other partners, will host free Citizenship Clinics at MDC’s eight campuses and outreach center on Saturday, May 20. The clinics will assist students and the community at large to complete naturalization applications.
The New Americans Campaign is nonpartisan national network that provides free legal assistance and increases awareness about naturalization. There are approximately 400,000 lawful permanent residents in South Florida, and more than 20,000 MDC students who are eligible, and have not yet taken the final step to become U.S. citizens.
“The story of Miami is the story of journeys – journeys that are not only measured in miles but milestones,” said Randy McGrorty, executive director at Catholic Legal Services. “For immigrants in Miami—their journey does not end until they take the oath of citizenship and formally join America.”
At the clinics, Catholic Legal Service partner staff and immigration attorneys will explain eligibility requirements, how to apply and complete the process. In total, 14 locations, including all MDC campuses, aim to assist 1,500 people to complete their naturalization applications on May 20.
The clinics are free, but applicants are responsible for paying the $725 filing fee to the Department of Homeland Security (fee waivers are available in some cases). To register for the Citizenship Clinics, or for more information, please visit www.miaminac.org.
