Miami, June 4, 2021 – Miami Dade College’s (MDC) Tower Theater Miami will once again commemorate Juneteenth with a special screening of the film “Wade in the Water: Drowning in Racism” at 8 p.m. Saturday, June 19, followed by a live discussion with Miami filmmaker Cathleen Dean and Miami Film Festival/Tower Theater Miami Director of Events Programming Nicolas Calzada. Event is free with registration.
Juneteenth is a national holiday commemorating the anniversary date of June 19, 1865, when Union Army General Gordon Granger presented an order ending slavery in Galveston, Texas. General Granger’s announcement put into effect the Emancipation Proclamation, which had been issued more than two and a half years earlier on Jan. 1, 1863, by President Abraham Lincoln. A century and a half later, cities and towns across the U.S. continue to celebrate the momentous occasion.
In her new documentary, “Wade in The Water: Drowning in Racism,” Dean explores the complex history floating off Florida’s blue waters—one of segregation and violence, but also one of protest and resistance. Diving deep into Black Florida’s fight for the right to swim, the film brings to life the 1960s Civil Rights protests that desegregated the state’s beaches and swimming pools.
