Miami, Dec. 8, 2023 – Miami Dade College’s (MDC) renowned student newspaper The Reporter was recently named the top two-year college student newspaper in Florida for the thirteenth consecutive year at the Florida College System Publications Association (FCSPA) awards ceremony in Daytona, FL. The Reporter placed in 16 of 19 individual categories, including eight first-place awards. The Reporter accumulated 35 overall points.
“I’m grateful to be part of a team that continues to uphold a legacy of excellence and service to our community,” said Nikole Valiente, The Reporter’s current editor-in-chief.
In addition to placing first overall in general excellence, The Reporter received individual top honors for News Story, Sports Writing, News Photo, Headlines, Editorial Cartoon, Illustration, Comic Strip and Humor Column. In addition, Juan S. Gomez and Anthony Martinez won Inner Circle awards for placing top three in at least three different categories.
The Reporter features 16 pages, prints on a monthly schedule, has a circulation of 10,250 per print cycle and is supplemented by a bi-weekly newsletter and a website with video and audio content. It is distributed at all eight MDC campuses and has newsrooms at the North, Wolfson and Kendall campuses. Over the past 13 years, the paper has won 194 awards from the FCSPA, including 120 first-place honors.
