MDC’s School of Science to Host STEM Interdisciplinary Undergraduate Research Symposium on Nov. 2

Miami, Oct. 29, 2024Miami Dade College’s (MDC) School of Science will host its annual STEM Interdisciplinary Research Symposium to showcase innovative research conducted by MDC students across multiple disciplines, including Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM), as well as the Humanities. The Symposium will take place on Saturday, Nov. 2, at 9 a.m. at MDC North Campus. The event is free and open to the public.

For the past decade, MDC has hosted the annual Symposium, which has become a cornerstone of the College’s mission to support undergraduate research. The event will feature a wide range of student presentations, covering topics that emphasize hands-on learning. These projects will showcase students’ application of advanced technology, creative problem-solving, and innovative thinking across various fields.

“The Symposium serves as an incredible opportunity to highlight our students’ achievements and the value of undergraduate research as a key part of their educational journey,” said MDC School of Science Dean Dr. Pablo R. Sacasa, “We are proud to celebrate their hard work, and the mentorship provided by our faculty.”

MDC Endowed teaching Chair, Dr. Nelly Delessy-Gassant, will deliver keynote address: “Embracing Innovation: My Journey Through Technology and Life.” The event will also feature students’ interdisciplinary research conducted under the Humanities Edge grant program, funded by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation as part of a Community College Pathway Partnership with Florida International University, and Excellence Across the Curriculum (EAC), a committee dedicated to showcasing student research in the humanities. The expansion into the humanities reflects MDC’s dedication to providing a comprehensive, well-rounded academic experience for its students.

The Symposium will culminate with the MDC School of Science STEM Research Institute program, where students engage in research alongside mentors from the College and local universities, including the University of Florida, Florida Atlantic University, Nova Southeastern University, St. Thomas University, Florida International University and the University of Miami. These collaborations provide students with the opportunity to conduct innovative research and gain valuable experience in their fields. The Symposium is supported by funding from the U.S. Department of Education and the National Science Foundation.
