MDC’s School of Business to Provide Market Investment and Financial Literacy Education with Launch of Student Managed Investment Fund March 31

Miami, March 30, 2022 – The Miami Dade College (MDC) Miguel B. Fernandez Family School of Global Business, Trade & Transportation will provide financial literacy and market investment education to students with the launch of the Student Managed Investment Fund (SMIF) on Thursday, March 31, 8:30 – 9:30 a.m. This marks the first time a community college has setup a fund that will complement algorithmic trading and investments in crypto assets. MDC President Madeline Pumariega and MDC Wolfson Campus President Beatriz Gonzalez will deliver remarks.

During the launch ceremony, MDC students will conduct their first trade for SMIF. Trade Station, an online securities and futures brokerage firm and trading technology company, will also make a contribution to SMIF that will be used to provide some of the initial seed money and fund projects and investments in crypto.

SMIF will provide students with hands-on financial experience in managing and administering an investment portfolio.  Students will have the opportunity to manage money in real time through simulated financial management strategies.  The SMIF will seek long-term investment returns, which may be re-invested or distributed to fund scholarships.

Through SMIF’s mission to enhance the educational experience of students through experiential learning activities in the financial market, MDC continues to provide the training and adaptive leadership skills needed to achieve lifelong business and personal success in an ever-changing job market and world.

The Miguel B. Fernandez Family School of Global Business, Trade & Transportation will host the event at the Business Innovation and Technology (BIT) Center.  The aim of the Miguel B. Fernandez Family School of Global Business, Trade & Transportation is to explore how new and emerging technologies disrupt existing business practices and create opportunities for students. The BIT Center is a step towards achieving this goal by combining state-of-the-art tools, industry expertise and strong curriculum pedagogy. For more information, visit https://www.mdc.edu/smif/
