MIAMI, Feb. 5, 2020 — Miami Dade College’s (MDC) North Campus will once again host more than 20,000 participants from public schools across Miami-Dade County for the annual Miami-Dade County Public Schools (M-DCPS) Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics (STEAM) EXPO & Science, Engineering, Communication, Mathematics Enhancement (SECME) Competition, Saturday, Feb. 8.
“We are very pleased to collaborate with our valued partner M-DCPS, in this endeavor that enriches and inspires student learning and application in the arts and sciences,” Dr. Malou C. Harrison, President of North and Padrón Campuses.
“The M-DCPS STEAM Expo has grown to be a huge success due to our partnership with MDC’s North Campus, which impacts thousands of students each year,” added Cristian Carranza, Administrative Director Division of Academics at M-DCPS.
Under the theme Championing Environmental Solutions, this year’s event will feature investigations performed by elementary, middle and senior high school students throughout South Florida. M-DCPS students will receive assessments on projects that may later be showcased for college scholarships and advanced academic opportunities. The best projects will be judged and selected by faculty from Miami Dade College, M-DCPS, and South Florida universities.
As in year’s past, The STEAM Expo will be hosted in conjunction with the national SECME student competition that directly influences students (K-12), with special interests on engineering design, to improve performance and learning outcomes. Throughout the school year, SECME participants get the unique opportunity to design, build, and assess a variety of engineering and research projects. Students work alongside professionals in the field who help them understand the importance of mathematics and science in the global economy. The competition encourages students to pursue postsecondary degrees in engineering, mathematics, science, and technology (STEM)- all degrees offered at MDC.
Science fair categories include behavioral and social sciences, arts, biochemistry, botany, chemistry, computer science, engineering, mathematics, microbiology, zoology, earth and planetary science, environmental science, physics, astronomy, medicine and health.
